Of Otak Otak & Childhood Memories

During Chinese New Year (yes, that long ago), my cousin Yee Kor brought us out to Tropicana City Mall for a movie. Before the movie, we walked around looking for a place to sit, relax and have a drink because we had some time to kill. We then noticed this lil restaurant/cafe/whateveryouwannacallit that looked pretty unique. The name however was a lil off in my opinion but can do lah.

The place? Its called Otak Otak. Brain brain. Hah! To those who are clueless (shame on you!!), Otak otak is actually a dish which tastes goooood but can be boring after a while. I think their specialty is otak otak (duh) but there are other types of food from what I saw in the menu. I didnt get to taste the food there yet so I cant comment at all on that but the interior is very cool.

Very. cool.

This is the menu.

Reminded me so much of my primary school days when our exercise books were also like that and it was wrapped. In secondary school, I didn't give a damn much to wrap an exercise book so yeah, it reminded me more of those primary school days.

I somehow find glass bottles very inneresting, especially the ol' skool soft drinks one. Then kids would use the bottle caps to play some kinda flicking game. Until this day, I still dont get how to play it. I also like the congkak set there!! I have one but its plastic and modern looking, so its not as fun as playing the real classic set :)

There's Nat and Yee Kor having their own battle.

Speaking of which, who wants to come over to my place to play congkak? its been too long! And I need to kill boredom anyways. hehe. No takers? Okay fine.

They also displayed some very old fashion toys.

See? there's the big chunky lego, marbles, and other stuff I cant really see. They also had the rubber band thing. You know, the one girls used to make jumping rope out of rubber bands and play those skipping and jumping game. What is it called in english? Hmm...I think its double dutch or something. Correct me if I'm wrong. I didn't see any Batu Seremban though. I loved that game a lot and I loved making it. Yes, I used to sew tiny rice bags to play Batu Seremban. Wonder what happened to the young me who once loved sewing and cooking. I miss that.

I get happy just looking at those because it reminds me of younger days where my only worry was not getting in trouble and to avoid the occasional spanking from mum and dad. Life was simple back then. Now, I gotta worry about getting a job and earn some moolah to survive. Then after getting a job, I gotta worry about those tax forms, savings, blah blah blah. So much shit.

I miss being a kid :(

There were other decorations as well but I was too lazy to snap around. I spooted an ol skool looking bicycle, the red hot water flask that I've seen a lot of times in my grandparents' house, old fashion fan, old fashion food tingkat, and loads more. Nice nice!!

Anyhoo, that aside, I would like to visit Otak Otak again, someday. Oh yeah, we can go for a meal and play congkak! Who's with me?? Hehh. Feels like I'm talking to myself.

Over and out.
